Paragraph 1: Why Do Exterior Walls Keep Leaking?
Exterior walls are constantly exposed to rain, temperature changes, and UV radiation. Over time, micro-cracks form in the plaster layer. If the mortar structure is not dense enough, water penetrates through capillary pores, leading to efflorescence, peeling, hollow spots, and even indoor dampness.
Many projects try to fix leaks by simply applying another layer of waterproof coating. However, if the base layer itself lacks waterproof performance, surface treatment only provides temporary relief. Effective waterproofing should start from the plastering stage with the right material system.
Paragraph 2: Main Material Solutions for Exterior Wall Waterproofing
There are two common approaches in construction practice: waterproof mortar and waterproof coatings.
1. Waterproof Mortar (Structural Waterproofing)
Functional additives are incorporated into cement mortar to improve density and crack resistance, such as:
HPMC – improves water retention and workability, reducing shrinkage cracks.
RDP – enhances bonding strength and flexibility, improving crack resistance and impermeability.
This solution is ideal for new construction projects, allowing leveling and waterproofing in one step with long-term durability.
2. Waterproof Coatings (Surface Waterproofing)
Including acrylic coatings, JS coatings, and silicone water repellents. These products form a surface film or penetrate into the substrate, mainly used for renovation or localized repair.
- Painted exterior walls → Acrylic or JS coating
- Tile or exposed concrete → Transparent silicone repellent
Paragraph 3: Workmanship Determines the Final Result
Even high-quality materials can fail if applied improperly. Key points include:
- Clean and repair the substrate before application.
- Apply plaster in layers (15–20 mm recommended).
- Ensure proper curing to prevent shrinkage cracks.
- Reinforce weak points such as windows, pipe penetrations, and corners.
In many cases, leakage is caused by poor workmanship rather than material defects. A well-designed material system combined with proper construction ensures long-term waterproof performance.
