Waterproof & Crack-Resistant Is a Scam? These 4 Proven Steps Make Anti-Crack Mortar Work

Created on 06.09
Many people think waterproof and crack-resistant products are nothing more than marketing hype.
In reality, project failures are usually caused by poor workmanship and low-quality materials rather than the anti-crack mortar itself.
For exterior wall cracking and water leakage problems, anti-crack mortar remains one of the most effective solutions. The key is choosing the right material and applying it correctly.

Step 1: Surface Preparation Is Everything

Surface preparation is often the most overlooked but most important part of the process.
Before application, remove all dust, grease, loose particles, and contaminants from the wall.
Any hollow spots, weak areas, or large cracks should be repaired first to create a solid and stable substrate.
Moisture control is equally important.
A substrate that is too dry will absorb water from the mortar too quickly, while excessive moisture can affect adhesion and curing.
Lightly dampen the wall 1–2 hours before application, but never leave standing water on the surface.

Step 2: Use Reinforcement Mesh Correctly

Anti-crack mortar alone is not enough to prevent cracking.
Alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh provides the structural reinforcement needed for long-term crack resistance.
The recommended method is wet embedding:
Apply a thin base coat first.
Press the mesh into the fresh mortar while it is still wet.
Ensure the mesh is fully embedded within the mortar layer.
Apply the finishing coat after the base layer begins to set.
The mesh should be positioned within the center of a 3–5 mm mortar layer for optimal performance.

Step 3: Apply Multiple Thin Layers

Applying mortar too thickly in a single pass is one of the most common causes of cracking.
The best practice is to apply several thin layers instead of one thick layer.
For exterior walls, the total thickness is generally controlled between 3–5 mm and applied in two coats.
For interior wall leveling or repair work, a single layer should not exceed 5 mm.
If a thicker build-up is required, divide the work into two or three applications and allow each layer to harden before applying the next.
This helps reduce shrinkage stress and improves long-term durability.

Step 4: Proper Curing Determines Final Performance

Proper curing of anti-crack mortar by spraying water and covering with plastic sheeting
Many cracking issues occur because curing is neglected.
After application, keep the surface properly cured for at least 7 days.
In hot and dry weather, lightly spray water on the surface 2–3 times per day starting from the second day.
During winter or windy conditions, cover the surface with plastic sheeting to prevent excessive moisture loss or frost damage.
Good curing practices are essential for achieving the full performance of anti-crack mortar.

Three Additional Tips

1. Don't Choose Materials Based on Price Alone

Low-quality products are often the root cause of cracking problems.
Choose anti-crack mortars that comply with JG/T 158-2013 standards whenever possible.

2. Follow the Recommended Water Ratio

Always mix according to the manufacturer's instructions.
A typical water-to-powder ratio is around 0.30:1.
Too much water reduces strength, while too little water increases the risk of shrinkage cracking.

3. Avoid Extreme Weather Conditions

Do not apply mortar during rain, strong winds, or direct exposure to extreme heat.
The recommended application temperature range is 5°C–35°C.

Conclusion

Anti-crack mortar is not a scam.
In most cases, successful performance depends on proper substrate preparation, mesh reinforcement, application thickness, and curing practices.
Choosing quality materials is only the first step. Proper application is what truly determines long-term waterproofing and crack resistance.
