Proper timing is crucial when using tile adhesive to ensure a strong and lasting bond. Unopened tile adhesive stored in a cool, dry environment typically has a shelf life of 1 year. If the adhesive has clumped, it indicates that chemical reactions have begun and it should no longer be used. When mixing, use a low-speed mixer (around 500 rpm) and blend the powder into water for 3–5 minutes until a smooth, lump-free paste forms. Allow the mixture to rest for about 5 minutes before stirring again—this lets the adhesive fully hydrate and release trapped air, optimizing its bonding performance.

Once mixed, tile adhesive remains workable for approximately 3 hours under standard conditions (20°C, 50% humidity). However, in hot or windy weather—especially during summer in southern regions—the usable time may drop to as little as 1 hour. After applying the adhesive, tiles can be adjusted within 30 minutes without compromising bond strength. Beyond this window, any movement may weaken the adhesion. Full drying and hardening of the adhesive usually takes around 24 hours. In cold or humid conditions, the curing process slows down due to reduced hydration rates, so proper protection is essential during winter installations.

Surface preparation also plays a critical role in successful tiling. Fresh concrete must cure for at least 6 weeks before tiles can be applied, while newly plastered surfaces require a minimum of 7 days of curing. Previously treated concrete or plaster surfaces should be cleaned with industrial detergent or degreaser, rinsed thoroughly with high-pressure water, and left to dry for at least 24 hours before tiling begins. Following these time-sensitive steps ensures a durable, high-quality finish.
